The quilt square I decided to make features one large tulip in the middle of the piece. I was inspired to quilt a tulip because it is my favorite flower, and I knew I wanted to create
something that reminded me of spring. My excitement for the upcoming season helped me to come up with this idea. I looked through various images of quilts that included tulips on them to help me gain an idea of what shapes I could use to create my flower. After seeing multiple options, I combined a few ideas I saw to come up with the one I made. My purpose with this piece was to create the feeling of spring by using mainly light-colored fabrics and the image of a flower that will bloom during the upcoming season. For me, this quilt square brings joyful memories of running through tulip fields as a kid and the excitement of the sunny seasons beginning.

I enjoyed my experience learning how to sew and create my very own quilt square. This project taught me a lot about the community effort that goes behind creating quilts and all types of art for that matter. Quilting can bring communities of people together that would otherwise not come together like we saw in the Gee’s Bend video and readings, and within the Aids quilt and “Common Threads” film. During my own work on my quilt square, I experienced this community effort with the help of my friend. When I got stuck while sewing and wasn’t sure how to fix my mistake, my friend in class helped me to fix it. This showed me how working with a community or friends can be helpful while creating quilts.
